WaSPP - Wastewater Surveillance for Pandemic Prevention
Spillover infection and outbreaks in humans of animal-origin viruses risk causing the next pandemic – but they typically go undetected, especially in low and middle income countries where the risk is highest.

Sampling and testing human wastewater for high risk viral families is a sensitive and cost-effective surveillance approach that has potential to support threat identification and mitigate the risk of future pandemics.

Our aims are:
To generate the knowledge, skills and tools to implement wastewater surveillance for pathogens with pandemic potential
To develop lab methods and pilot wastewater surveillance for pathogens with pandemic potential
To develop bioinformatic software for analysis of sequence data to support epidemiological analysis and multisectoral response
Resources
WaSPP is committed to releasing all protocols, software and publications with global access for others to reuse and adapt. We will also be offering training and mentoring opportunities in wastewater surveillance, including placements among the laboratories in our network.
